WA Govt green lights Woodside Burrup clearing 10:08 AM February 28
The Western Australian Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Michelle Roberts, has given her approval for Woodside Energy to clear a large area of land on the Burrup Peninsula, in the state's north-west, as part of its Pluto gas development.
Mrs Roberts told State Parliament, Woodside will have to abide by stringent conditions to protect Aboriginal rock art of high significance and provide a comprehensive cultural management plan.
Twenty-five sites will remain untouched, including one featuring the tasmanian tiger.
Mrs Roberts says the project is too significant to be abandoned.
"The importance of the Woodside project goes beyond its importance to the state of Western Australia, it extends to the national economy," she said.
"This decision is important to the state of Western Australia and in today's dollar terms will generate $17.5 billion to the national economy." Source: ABC
